The Works of Homer
The Iliad, the Odyssey, the Batrachomyomachia, the Hymns, the Poems, some of them, Latin and Greek version
Important Basel edition based on the Greek text by Henrie Estienne from 1566, preceded by an epigram by the Swiss humanist Heinrich Pantaleon (1522-1595) and which uses the presentation of the French Protestant humanist Sebastien Castellion , or Chatellion or also Ch?¢teillon, Latinized as Sebastianus Castellio and better known in Italian as Sebastiano Castellione (1515-1563) who was among the greatest supporters of religious tolerance as well as an esteemed opponent of Erasmus of Rotterdam and among the most appreciated translators and connoisseurs of ancient classical literature.
Rather scarce edition of this monumental edition of Homer’s Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Batrachomyomachiaby the erudite scholar and poet Jean de Sponde, with parallel Greek and Latin text, and Sponde’s extensive commentary.
Also included are Pindar’s resumé of the Iliad, and Cornelius Nepos’ translation of Dares Phrygius on the Trojan war.
Sponde is best known today for his striking collection of lyric verse, the Sonnets d’amour and Sonnets de la mort published posthumously c. 1598. Sponde’s poetry was ‘discovered’ in 1930 by the critic Alan Boase, who judged it comparable with contemporary English metaphysical poetry of Donne and Sidney.
