Metamorphoses (Metamorphōseōn libri XV) is an epic-mythological poem by Publius Ovidius Naso (43 BC – 17 AD). It is considered one of the most significant works of universal literature. The author narrates, through the sequence of about 250 transformations— from man to plant or animal or statue or other inanimate form—a story of the cosmos, from the primordial chaos to the apotheosis of Caesar and the glorification of Augustus. Through this work, completed shortly before his exile in 8 AD, Ovid made numerous mythological stories and tales of Greek and Roman classicism famous and transmitted them to posterity.

Despite the great popularity that The Metamorphoses had since the time they were composed—around the year of exile (8 AD)—no manuscripts from that era have survived to us. On the other hand, the poem was branded as a "dangerously pagan work," and probably many manuscripts were destroyed or lost, especially during the period of the Christianity of the Empire.
There are fragments dating back to the 9th and 10th centuries; but the first real manuscripts that we are able to use for textual reconstruction are datable around the 11th century. There are two principal editions: the Bologna edition of 1471 and the Roman edition of 1471-72.
