1724 1st Edtn HISTORY OF HIS OWN TIME [TWO VOLUMES] By Gilbert Burnet (Bishop of Salisbury) Good History
1724 1st Edition ,
HISTORY OF HIS OWN TIME [TWO VOLUMES]
First edition (Vol I 1724; Vol II 1734).
By Gilbert Burnet (Bishop of Salisbury)
Author Bio: Gilbert Burnet (1643–1715) was a Scottish theologian, historian, and Whig-leaning churchman who moved at the heart of late Stuart power. Closely connected to leading political and religious figures of his age, Burnet’s History of His Own Time became one of the most influential—and contested—first-hand narratives of Restoration and Revolution Britain. Written with the immediacy of a participant-observer, it remains a cornerstone source for the period: Charles II and James II, the crises of church and state, and the transformation of the monarchy at the Glorious Revolution, continuing through Queen Anne and the Peace of Utrecht.
Provenance: With armorial bookplates including Rev. Thomas Coombe, M.A. and Arthur E. Coombe (two distinct plates observed).
Synopsis: Full calf (worn), 2 vols. folio.
A handsome first edition folio set of Burnet’s famous late-Stuart chronicle, issued posthumously and long valued for its proximity to events and personalities. Volume I covers the Restoration of Charles II through the Revolution settlement under William and Mary, with a prefixed summary recap of affairs in church and state from James I to the Restoration. Volume II continues from the Revolution through the conclusion of the Peace at Utrecht in the reign of Queen Anne, with the Author’s Life added by the editor.
A particularly attractive feature of this set is the presence of the well-known manuscript-style deposition note (in a red-ruled box), stating that the original manuscript of both volumes would be deposited in the Cotton Library—an emblematic reminder of the text’s early custodial history and the seriousness with which the work was positioned from the outset.
