Good - The British Monarchy: or, a New Chorographical Description of all the Dominions subject to the King of Great Britain. London: published according to Act of Parliament, 1 October 1748.
Large folio, engraved throughout, comprising an allegorical frontispiece (“Britannia”) after Gravelot, engraved title, list of subscribers, five engraved maps (including a large folding “Map of the King of Great Britain’s Dominions in Europe, Africa & America,” and general maps of the British Isles, England & Wales, Scotland, and Ireland), a folding statistical table, and 190 numbered engraved leaves (numbered to 161, then 164–190). The second part, A Short Description of the American Colonies, bears its own title dated 19 December 1747.
Binding: Contemporary calf boards with gilt panel decoration, later rebacked in period style with gilt tools and raised bands. Boards with typical edge wear and surface abrasion; the reback strong and serviceable. Bookplate of Henry Barnes, a late-Victorian/Edwardian private collector, to the front endpaper.
Condition: General toning and scattered spotting, occasional marginal soiling and short tears commensurate with age and size.
Notable feature: The decoration around the Arms of Shrewsbury (p.129) includes one of the earliest known printed cricket scenes.
