TEN ETCHINGS, ILLUSTRATIVE OF THE DEVIL'S WALK
By Thomas Landseer
Thomas Landseer A.R.A. (1795 – 1880) was an English engraver, etcher, and illustrator, best known as the elder brother of the celebrated animal painter Sir Edwin Landseer. Born in London, Thomas was trained by his father, the engraver John Landseer A.R.A., and by the age of sixteen was already assisting in the family studio. Monkeyana (1827) and The Devil’s Walk (1831) stand out as examples of his sharp satirical wit, moral commentary, and fascination with anthropomorphic and diabolical subjects. These works place him in the Romantic tradition of Henry Fuseli and James Gillray, yet with a unique blend of humour and psychological observation.
