The Hon. R. H. Lyttelton (R. H. Lyttelton) – English amateur sportsman and sports writer from the prominent Lyttelton family; wrote on cricket and golf (Out-door Games: Cricket and Golf).
Edmund Selous – British naturalist and ornithological writer, an early advocate of patient field observation of bird behaviour; author of Bird Watching (and brother of big-game hunter Frederick Courteney Selous).
W. M. Tod (William Montgomery Tod, M.A.) – British agricultural writer and educator associated with Cambridge’s agricultural teaching; wrote practical, late-Victorian/Edwardian guides on farming and rural management.
Edward Grey (1862–1933)—later 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon—was a British Liberal politician and diplomat, best known as the UK’s Foreign Secretary (1905–1916) and a key figure in British foreign policy in the years leading up to and during the early part of WWI. Away from politics he was a devoted countryman, fly-fisher, and bird-lover, writing widely admired nature-and-sport essays; his Haddon Hall Library volume Fly Fishing reflects that quieter side of his life (he also wrote The Charm of Birds).
George A. B. Dewar – British naturalist and country-life writer (and one of the series editors), known for lively books blending natural history with rural travel and observation, including Wild Life in Hampshire Highlands.
J. Otho Paget – English hunting man and sporting author, best known for writing on foxhunting and field sports (including his classic Hunting volume in the Haddon Hall Library series).
A. Innes Shand (Alexander Innes Shand) – Scottish journalist and prolific author (travel, history, biography, and commentary) who also wrote on sporting subjects, including the Haddon Hall Library’s Shooting volume.
S. Reynolds Hole (Samuel Reynolds Hole) – Anglican clergyman and celebrated Victorian gardener/rose expert (often linked with the National Rose Society); wrote popular horticultural books including Our Gardens.
John Nisbet – British forester and influential writer on forestry and woodland management; author of widely read works on British woods and forest practice (including Our Forests and Woodlands).

Synopsis: An Edwardian illustrated series of 9 volumes published in London by J. M. Dent and edited by the Marquess of Granby and George A. B. Dewar.
What’s in the set (themes): country pursuits and rural life—gardens, fly-fishing, hunting, shooting, farming, bird-watching, woodlands, outdoor games, etc. Auction and bookseller listings consistently describe it as a 9-volume set with lots of plates/illustrations.
Out-door Games: Cricket and Golf (The Hon. R. H. Lyttelton) — Two mini-books in one: a lively primer on playing, tactics, and sporting spirit in cricket and golf, with plenty of period flavour about amateur sport.
Bird Watching (Edmund Selous) — One of the early “watch-and-learn” bird books: patient observation of behaviour, song, courtship, nesting, and daily habits, written to encourage field watching rather than collecting.
Farming (W. M. Tod) — A practical snapshot of turn-of-the-century British farming: soils, crops, livestock, rotations, labour, and the business realities of running a farm.
Fly Fishing (Sir Edward Grey) — A reflective, practical book on trout fishing: tackle, reading water, flies, seasons, and the quiet pleasures of angling, written in an elegant “statesman-naturalist” voice.
Wild Life in Hampshire Highlands (George A. B. Dewar) — Nature essays and field observations from rural Hampshire: mammals, birds, weather, and landscape, told through walks and encounters rather than as a technical handbook.
Hunting (J. Otho Paget) — A classic foxhunting book: hounds and horses, etiquette, country knowledge, the structure of a hunt day, and the culture and characters around the sport.
Shooting (A. Innes Shand) — A broad sporting survey: game shooting in its various forms, equipment and technique, fieldcraft, and the traditions (and controversies) surrounding Edwardian shooting.
Our Gardens (S. Reynolds Hole) — A warm, witty tour of garden pleasures: planning and planting, flowers (especially roses), seasonal garden life, and the social joys of gardening.
Our Forests and Woodlands (John Nisbet) — An accessible overview of British forestry: how woods are planted and managed, timber and woodland economics, and the long view of trees as national resources.
Bird Watching — inscribed to “J. B. L. Stilwell” from “R. A. E. & B. W.”, dated Sept. 30th 1903; also “R. Irwin” (and a small pencilled code)
Farming - bookplate: “A. H. Henniker-Major”
Hunting — inscribed “From Lord Rothschild”, dated Nov. 14, 1900
Wild Life in Hampshire Highlands — bookplate: “Ex Libris Owen Isbern Gilbert”; pencilled ownership “Sydney K. Reed — London, July 1971”
