Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, called in English Poliphilo's Strife of Love in a Dream or The Dream of Poliphilus, is a book said to be by Francesco Colonna. The work was first published in 1499 in Venice by Aldus Manutius. This first edition has an elegant page layout, with refined woodcut illustrations in an Early Renaissance style. Hypnerotomachia Poliphili presents a mysterious arcane allegory in which the main protagonist, Poliphilo, pursues his love, Polia, through a dreamlike landscape. In the end, he is reconciled with her by the "Fountain of Venus".
Enormously influential, yet stubbornly enigmatic, it is a jewel of historical literature and a rare entity in terms of its form, quality, and depth of content. This is for all those interested in typography and type design, for enthusiasts, design historians, collectors, and researchers. Hypnerotomachia Poliphili is as much an essential historical work as it is a piece of art.
This new translation by Paul Summers Young takes a poetic, authentic approach, seeking to recreate, as far as possible, the sense of the original.
The new translation along with a high-quality facsimile of the 1499 first edition as a bundle.
This beautiful edition is printed and bound in Venice by Grafiche Veneziane with a red cover design exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign; front board and spine decor in black and gold gilt, with blind debossed design to rear board. This edition features marbled endpapers and is printed on rough ivory-coloured, wood-free, age-resistant paper.
