MARO EX EDITIONE AND EX RECENSIONE

and
Q. HORATIUS FLACCUS EX RECENSIONE
[Two Volumes Bound as One]

A handsome eighteenth-century Amsterdam printing of two of the greatest poets of classical Rome, bound together in one attractive pocket-format volume. The first work contains Virgil, edited from the recension of Nicolaas Heinsius and Pieter Burman; the second contains Horace, presented in the learned tradition of Heinsius, Fabri, Bentley and Sanadon.
Printed by Jacob Wetstein at Amsterdam, this elegant Latin classics sammelband reflects the refined Dutch and Continental taste for compact scholarly editions of the ancient authors. Bound in speckled full calf with gilt edges, an ornate gilt spine, marbled endpapers and engraved embellishment, it has strong decorative shelf appeal as well as genuine classical interest.
The volume brings together Virgil’s pastoral, agricultural and epic poetry with Horace’s lyric, satirical and reflective verse: a highly collectable pairing of the two central poets of the Augustan age.

Author Bio: Publius Virgilius Maro, known in English as Virgil or Vergil, was the pre-eminent Roman poet of the Augustan age. His principal works are the Eclogues, the Georgics and the Aeneid, the last of which became the great national epic of Rome and one of the central monuments of European literature.

Quintus Horatius Flaccus, known as Horace, was one of Rome’s most enduring lyric, satirical and moral poets. Friend of Maecenas and contemporary of Virgil, he is celebrated for the Odes, Epodes, Satires, Epistles and the Ars Poetica. His wit, balance, philosophical moderation and technical mastery made him one of the most imitated poets of the classical tradition.

Editor Bio:
Nicolaas Heinsius and Pieter Burman were among the leading Dutch classical scholars associated with the editing and transmission of Latin texts. Their work belongs to the great seventeenth- and eighteenth-century tradition of Continental philology, in which ancient authors were carefully collated, corrected and prepared for scholarly and educated readers.
