THE FAMOUS AND MEMORABLE WORKES OF JOSEPHUS
A MAN OF MUCH HONOUR AND LEARNING AMONG THE JEWS
Faithfully Translated out of Latine and French by Tho(mas) Lodge Doctor of Physicke
By Thomas Lodge

Author Bio: Thomas Lodge (c. 1558 – September 1625) was an English writer and medical practitioner whose life spanned the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. After Lodge received his M.D. from Oxford University, his works from then on take on a more serious note, comprising translations of Josephus (1602), of Seneca (1614), a Learned Summary of Du Bartas's Divine Sepmaine (1625 and 1637). He also wrote medical literature including the Treatise of the Plague (1603), The poore Mans Talentt (c. 1623), and a popular manual, which remained unpublished, on Domestic Medicine.

Provenance: Early ownership inscription on title page: “G. Scharf jun. July 25. 1834.”

Autograph letter dated Highbury, 9 Nov 1844, signed Samuel Sharpe, addressed to Chas Fellows Esq, 30 Russell Square (wrapper with Penny Red stamp), discussing a passage in Greek Josephus / Appian and referencing “Mr. Scharf.”
(Nice 19th-century scholarly association material accompanying the book.)

Synopsis: A handsome early-seventeenth-century folio of Josephus in Thomas Lodge’s influential English translation — an essential cornerstone for early modern biblical history, classical scholarship, and the long reception of Judaean antiquity in English letters. This 1620 Waterson issue remains one of the classic “great folios” of the period, prized for its imposing format, woodcut printer’s device, and dense historical matter (Antiquities, Wars, and related texts) that shaped English historical and religious reading for generations.
