Author Bio: Dionisio Barone di Kossin, an early 18th-century writer associated with the imperial court of Charles VI, is chiefly known for this extensive moral-political life of Alexander the Great, published at Parma by Paolo Monti in 1716.
Provenance: With a manuscript provenance note recording the book as bequeathed by the will of Edward Howard, Duke of Norfolk, “to remain in his Family,” with executors named below. This appears to relate to Edward Howard, 9th Duke of Norfolk, hereditary Earl Marshal and a notable Catholic aristocrat associated with Worksop Manor and Norfolk House.
Synopsis: Alexander III of Macedon (20/21 July 356 BC – 10/11 June 323 BC), commonly known as Alexander the Great, was a king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. He succeeded his father Philip II to the throne in 336 BC at the age of 20, and spent most of his ruling years conducting a lengthy military campaign throughout Western Asia and Egypt. By the age of 30, he had created one of the largest empires in history, stretching from Greece to northwestern India. He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered to be one of history's greatest and most successful military commanders.

Very Good - Vellum binding soiled and marked, with some rubbing and wear, particularly to spine, corners, and flap edges. Tie/flap elements present, with wear. Binding firm. Text block sound. Pages show expected age toning, occasional browning, spotting, handling marks, and minor creasing. Engraved plates show fold lines as issued. A handsome and well-preserved copy of Volume I with attractive provenance.
Illustrated with two folding copper-engraved portraits outside the text, depicting Charles VI and Dionisio Barone di Kossin, engraved by Bartolomeus Bonvicinus. With decorative initials, including at least one apparently hand-coloured initial in red, blue, yellow and green. The hand-colouring is noted as present in this copy; no claim is made that it is present in all copies.
