A 1665 Amsterdam pocket edition of Lucan’s great Roman civil-war epic, Pharsalia, printed by the celebrated Dutch printer and publisher Joan Blaeu. This compact Latin duodecimo presents the ten books of Lucan’s account of the struggle between Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great, one of the defining political and military conflicts of the late Roman Republic.
The edition is enhanced by the notes of Hugo Grotius, revised from earlier editions, with Thomas Farnaby’s marginal commentary. A desirable seventeenth-century scholarly printing of a major classical text, combining Roman epic poetry, republican history, Caesariana and Dutch Golden Age book production in an attractive small-format volume.
Pharsalia is notable for its dark, forceful treatment of civil war. Unlike the more celebratory heroic epic tradition, Lucan’s poem presents Roman greatness turned inward upon itself, with Caesar, Pompey and Cato set against a world of political collapse, ambition and moral crisis.

Author Bio: Marcus Annaeus Lucanus, better known in English as Lucan, was born in Corduba, Hispania Baetica, in AD 39 and died in AD 65. He was a Roman poet of the Imperial Latin period and is best remembered for Pharsalia, also known as De bello civili. His energetic style, political intensity and unusually direct treatment of civil conflict distinguish him from the more mythological and divinely ordered epic tradition associated with Virgil.
Synopsis: Pharsalia is a Roman epic poem on the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great. The poem follows the collapse of the Roman Republic into internal war, moving through Caesar’s crossing of the Rubicon, the conflict between the Caesarian and Pompeian factions, and the decisive struggle culminating in the Battle of Pharsalus. Unfinished at ten books, it remains one of the most powerful surviving literary treatments of ambition, tyranny, republican virtue and civil catastrophe in classical literature.
