SPECIMEN UNIVERSAE REI NUMMARIAE ANTIQUAE
By Andreas Morellius Helvetus
Author Bio: Andreas Morellius (Andreas Morell / André Morel, 1646–1703) was a Swiss antiquary and numismatist from Bern. From 1680 he worked with the French royal coin cabinet in Paris/Versailles, and later served at the coin cabinet of Arnstadt. His 1683 Specimen universae rei nummariae antiquae was conceived as a preliminary essay toward a comprehensive treatment of ancient coinage; his major Thesaurus Morellianus appeared posthumously in 1734.
Provenance: Bookplate of Sir Walter Halsey (1868-1950), Gaddesden Library - Sir Walter Johnston Halsey, 2nd Baronet OBE DL JP (1 June 1868 – 2 September 1950), sometime DL and JP for Hertfordshire and Middlesex, and chair. Legal Insurance Co
Synopsis: Specimen universae rei nummariae antiquae is Andreas Morellius’s preliminary survey of ancient numismatics, intended as a specimen or prospectus for a much larger treatment of the subject. The work discusses ancient coins as historical evidence, illustrating types, inscriptions, portraits, deities, personifications, and civic or imperial imagery. Its 18 engraved plates reproduce numerous ancient coin types, making the book both a scholarly numismatic essay and a visual guide to classical coin iconography. Published in Paris in 1683, it represents an important early contribution to the systematic study of ancient coins before Morellius’s larger posthumous Thesaurus Morellianus.
