1774 First German-printed edition, in Latin. THEOLOGIA MORALIS By DD Antonii Godeau
1774 First German-printed edition, in Latin.
THEOLOGIA MORALIS
Pars I Complectens Tractatus Erste in Deutschland gedruckte Ausgabe
By DD Antonii Godeau
Author Bio: Antoine Godeau (1605–1672), Bishop of Grasse and later Vence, was a French ecclesiastic, poet, exegete, and one of the original members of the Académie Française. Initially prominent in the literary salons of seventeenth-century Paris, he later devoted his talents to Catholic devotional, biblical, historical, and moral-theological writing. His works were widely read in clerical and religious contexts, and his moral theology, grounded in Scripture, the Church Fathers, and conciliar tradition, continued to circulate after his death in later French and Latin editions.
Synopsis: First German-printed edition of Antoine Godeau’s Catholic moral theology, derived from Scripture, the Fathers, and the councils. Pars I treats the foundations and sources of moral doctrine, the nature of sin and law, the commandment of charity, and the first two commandments of the Decalogue. Written for clerical and pastoral use, the work reflects the seventeenth-century French episcopal tradition of moral instruction, combining doctrinal exposition with practical guidance for conscience, confession, and Christian conduct.
