1632 Mixed-Date Elzevir Edtn GRAECORUM RESPUBLICAE By Ubbo Emmius Very Good History
1632 Mixed-Date Elzevir Edition
GRAECORUM RESPUBLICAE
Graecorum respublicae ab Ubbone Emmio Descriptae
Leiden [Lugduni Batavorum]: Ex Officina Elzeviriana, Part I dated 1632, Part II dated 1644.
A compact Elzevir printing of Emmius’s study of the constitutions and political organisation of the Greek republics and federations. Parts 1 & 2 bound together in 1 volume, with engraved title to Part I dated 1632 and printed title to Part II dated 1644. A pocket-sized 24mo in vellum: an attractive mixed-date Leiden Elzevir copy of a work prized for both classical-political content and the collectable small-format press tradition.
Ubbo Emmius, the East Frisian historian and humanist, studied at Rostock and later in Geneva under Theodorus Beza, and became the first rector of the Academy/University of Groningen in 1614.
By Ubbo Emmius
Author Bio: Ubbo Emmius (1547–1625) was born at Greetsiel in East Frisia. He studied at Rostock and later in Geneva under Theodorus Beza, whose Calvinist thought strongly influenced him. In 1614 he became the first rector magnificus of the Academy of Groningen, where he also served as professor of Greek and History.
This work belongs to Emmius’s wider project on ancient Greece; modern scholarship notes that the political and constitutional material of the Greek states was issued in 1632, and again with 1644 issuance for Part II. Part I concentrates on Athens / Attica and Sparta / Laconia; Part II extends to a broader sequence of ancient republics and federations, including Crete, Argos, Thebes, Corinth, Syracuse, Corcyra, Samos, Chios, Rhodes, the Achaean and Aetolian confederacies, Acarnania, Epirus, the Amphictyonic and Lycian confederacies, Massalia, and others.
Synopsis: A handy Elzevir pocket edition of Emmius’s account of the Greek commonwealths: Part I devoted to the two great exemplars, Athens and Sparta; Part II widening the frame to the other republics and leagues of the ancient Greek world and its colonial extensions. A learned small-format classic, appealing both as a text of early-modern political historiography and as a characteristic Leiden Elzevir production.
