One of the most ambitious modern Folio Society treatments of Shelley’s Gothic masterpiece, this edition presents the authoritative 1831 text with an introduction by Richard Holmes and an extensive suite of illustrations by Angela Barrett. Eight brooding colour plates are complemented by nine finely worked black-and-white vignettes, with Barrett’s designs extending to both the full leather binding and the publisher’s slipcase.
A particularly handsome production, bound in ice-blue leather and dramatically blocked in silver and black foils, with all three page-edges silvered. The volume is housed in its black cloth-covered slipcase blocked in silver and retains the original Folio Society shipping carton, an increasingly desirable point of completeness for collectors of modern Folio limited editions.

A highly attractive example of this signed Folio Society limited edition.
Bound in full ice-blue leather blocked in silver and black foils with a design by Angela Barrett. Binding presents extremely well. All three page-edges are silvered and the volume retains its ribbon marker.
Internally clean and bright, printed on Abbey Pure Rough paper and set in Clifford type with Operetta for display. Complete with colour frontispiece and seven further colour plates printed on Arctic Volume Ivory paper, together with nine black-and-white vignettes by Angela Barrett. Limitation label present and signed by the artist.
Housed in the publisher’s black cloth-covered slipcase, blocked in silver foil with a further design by Barrett. The original Folio Society shipping carton is also retained, adding to the completeness and collector appeal of the set.
A fine and complete example of one of the most visually accomplished modern Folio Society editions of Frankenstein, combining a major literary text with Barrett’s atmospheric illustration and elaborate production design.

SYNOPSIS
Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant and obsessively ambitious young scientist, discovers a means of imparting life to inanimate matter. His triumph becomes horror when the creature he has assembled awakens, and Frankenstein abandons his creation.
Intelligent, sensitive and initially longing for companionship, the creature encounters fear, cruelty and rejection wherever he turns. His isolation gradually develops into rage against the creator who gave him life yet refused him responsibility or affection, setting in motion a devastating cycle of vengeance, guilt and pursuit.
Moving from Geneva and the Alps to the remote wastes of the Arctic, Shelley’s novel explores creation and responsibility, scientific ambition, isolation, prejudice and the limits of human knowledge. More than two centuries after its first publication, Frankenstein remains one of the defining works of Gothic literature and a foundational text of science fiction.

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797–1851), née Godwin, was an English novelist, essayist and biographer and one of the central literary figures of the Romantic period.
Her enduring masterpiece, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, was first published anonymously in 1818 and substantially revised for the 1831 edition. Combining Gothic fiction, philosophical speculation and the consequences of scientific ambition, the novel is widely regarded as a foundational work of modern science fiction and remains one of the most influential works in English literature.

Angela Barrett (born 1955) is a British artist and illustrator celebrated for the dreamlike, psychologically charged quality of her work.
Her illustrations for this Folio Society edition combine richly atmospheric colour plates with intricate monochrome vignettes. Barrett also created the designs used on the leather binding and publisher’s slipcase, making the illustration and physical design of the book an unusually integrated artistic production.
