2006 1st Folio Edtn Ltd 678/1750 Goat Skin/Clamshell Box WAR AND PEACE By Leo Tolstoy Illus. Feliks Topolski
2006 1st Folio Edition Goat Skin/Clamshell Box
WAR AND PEACE
A grand Folio Society limited edition of Tolstoy’s masterpiece: the complete novel in a single substantial volume, translated and introduced by Rosemary Edmonds and illustrated throughout by Feliks Topolski. Finely bound in Wassa goatskin with a design by Jeff Clements and housed in the original clamshell/solander box, this is a handsome modern fine-press presentation of one of the great monuments of world literature.
By Leo Tolstoy
Author Bio: Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828–1910), known in English as Leo Tolstoy, was one of the supreme novelists of the 19th century. His major works, above all War and Peace and Anna Karenina, stand at the summit of realist fiction and continue to shape the modern idea of the novel.
Illustrated By: Feliks Topolski
Illustrator Bio: Feliks Topolski RA (1907–1989) was a Polish-British painter, draughtsman, and illustrator celebrated for his energetic, immediate line and his gift for recording movement, conflict, and public life. His restless, expressive visual style is particularly well suited to Tolstoy’s vast scenes of battle, society, and inner upheaval.
Synopsis: Set against the Napoleonic campaigns and the French invasion of Russia, War and Peace follows the intertwined lives of the Bezukhovs, Bolkonskys, Rostovs, and other aristocratic families as they move through love, ambition, inheritance, loss, war, and spiritual crisis. Yet the book is far more than a historical epic: it is also a searching meditation on character, chance, history, and the limits of power. Tolstoy moves with extraordinary ease between drawing room and battlefield, intimacy and spectacle, producing a novel of immense scale that still feels deeply human at every turn. In this Folio Society edition, Topolski’s vivid illustrations add motion and atmosphere to a text already remarkable for its sweep, energy, and psychological depth.
The Tolstoy bio, Topolski bio, and plot framing above are grounded in standard reference summaries and edition notes.
