A magnificent deluxe Folio Society presentation of Tolstoy’s masterpiece, issued in a strictly limited edition of 1,750 numbered copies, this being copy no. 678. The complete novel is presented in a single substantial volume, translated and introduced by Rosemary Edmonds and illustrated throughout with the vigorous drawings of Feliks Topolski.
Finely bound for the Folio Society by Real Lachenmaier, Germany, in full maroon Wassa goatskin, the binding is blocked in gilt, black and white with a striking design by Jeff Clements. The volume has a gilt top edge, gold-toned endpapers and a grey ribbon marker, and is housed in the original black cloth clamshell/solander box, lettered in gilt to the spine.
Importantly, this copy is complete with the separately issued 12-page booklet, What is War and Peace? by John Bayley, retained with the book in its original solander case. A particularly handsome and complete example of one of the Folio Society’s most imposing modern literary limited editions.
CONDITION, COLLATION & COPY NOTES
A superb and notably well-preserved example of this Folio Society limited edition.
The full Wassa goatskin binding remains bright and attractive, with the gilt, black and white blocking strong and well defined. The spine lettering is crisp and the boards show very little obvious evidence of handling. The gilt top edge, endpapers and ribbon marker remain well presented.
Internally, the volume is clean, fresh and highly presentable, with no significant defects apparent from inspection. The pages shown remain bright and clean and the Topolski illustrations are sharp throughout.
The original black cloth solander case is likewise in notably strong condition, with only very minor superficial handling or dust marks consistent with careful storage. The gilt spine lettering remains clear.
The separately issued John Bayley booklet, What is War and Peace?, is present and well preserved.
A particularly attractive collector’s copy: complete, substantial and elegant, with the main volume, original solander case and accompanying booklet surviving together in notably strong condition.

SYNOPSIS
Set against the Napoleonic Wars and the French invasion of Russia, War and Peace follows the intertwined fortunes of the Bezukhov, Bolkonsky and Rostov families, moving between the private dramas of love, inheritance, ambition and loss and the immense historical spectacle of war.

AUTHOR BIO
Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828–1910), known in English as Leo Tolstoy, was one of the supreme novelists of the nineteenth century. His major works, above all War and Peace and Anna Karenina, stand among the defining achievements of realist fiction.
Tolstoy combined extraordinary psychological observation with an expansive interest in history, morality, faith, family and social life. Few writers have moved so convincingly between the intimate experience of individual characters and the vast forces of historical change.
Translator Bio:
Rosemary Edmonds (1905–1998) was a distinguished British translator of Russian literature and became particularly associated with the works of Tolstoy. Her English translation of War and Peace was first published by Penguin in 1957 and was subsequently adopted by the Folio Society.
Her fluent, highly readable translation became familiar to generations of English-language readers and forms the text of this deluxe Folio Society edition.

Feliks Topolski
Feliks Topolski RA (1907–1989) was a Polish-born British painter, draughtsman and illustrator celebrated for the speed, energy and immediacy of his line.
A remarkable observer of public life, ceremony, conflict and human movement, Topolski brought an almost reportorial vitality to his drawings. His restless and expressive style is especially well suited to Tolstoy’s shifting panorama of battlefields, salons, crowds, soldiers and private lives.
