RIDDLEY WALKER

By Russell Hoban

Author Bio: Russell Conwell Hoban (1925–2011) was an American-born writer who made London his home from 1969 until his death. His work ranges across fantasy, science fiction, magical realism, mainstream fiction, poetry, and children’s literature.

Illustrated By: Quentin Blake
Illustrator Bio: Quentin Blake (b. 1932) is one of Britain’s most celebrated illustrators, known for his long collaboration with Russell Hoban and, most famously, Roald Dahl. His work spans children’s books, literary illustration, magazines, exhibitions, and public art.

Synopsis: Riddley Walker is Russell Hoban’s genre-defying post-apocalyptic masterpiece, set in a far-future Kent after nuclear catastrophe has pushed England back into a new Iron Age. Told in the fractured phonetic idiom known as “Riddleyspeak,” it is at once a visionary quest narrative, a meditation on myth, power, memory and language, and one of the most distinctive novels of modern speculative fiction.

This Folio Society limited edition was set in Poliphilus and Blado with hand-drawn lettering, and printed and bound by Kösel in full cloth with a design by Quentin Blake. Issued in a limitation of 1,000 numbered copies signed by Blake, with 20 lettered copies not for sale, it includes 39 colour illustrations, an additional essay by Quentin Blake, a specially commissioned postscript by Dr Rowan Williams, printed edges, pale brown endleaves, a matching slipcase, and a map of Walker’s post-apocalyptic world.
