DESCRIPTION
The Hanged God
Óðinn Grímnir
Volume I of the Óðinn Trilogy within the Northern Otherworld Series
By Shani Oates
An exceptionally scarce and lavishly produced Artisanal issue of Shani Oates's study of Óðinn, copy 18 of only 39 Artisanal copies produced, signed by the author and in the 24K gold-leaf edge state.
Published by Anathema Publishing in 2022 as part of the first hardcover printing of The Hanged God, the Artisanal Edition represents the highest specification of the edition. Bound in dark brown “Stagecoach Bark” genuine leather, with raised spine bands, gilt decoration and lettering, blind decoration to the rear board, handmade marbled endpapers by Robert Wu, and the page edges treated with 24-karat gold leaf.
The volume is housed in its striking publisher's slipcase, covered in handmade gold-coloured Nepalese Lokta paper and decorated with a large wrap-around representation of Óðinn riding the eight-legged Sleipnir, adapted from the famous image on the Tjängvide picture stone.
The publisher produced only 39 Artisanal copies in total, divided between examples having 18K gold-painted edges and the more elaborate 24K gold-leaf treatment represented by the present copy. The precise numerical division between the two states does not appear to have been published.
The limitation plate is numbered 18/39 in gold, signed by Shani Oates, and carries an additional manuscript inscription above the printed title.
A particularly attractive example of one of Anathema Publishing's most elaborate modern esoteric bindings, combining a very small limitation with hand-finished materials and a subject central to contemporary Northern esotericism.
Edition Note:
The Hanged God: Óðinn Grímnir was originally issued in paperback before Anathema produced its first hardcover printing in 2022.
The 2022 hardcover issue appeared in Standard and Collector's forms together with this substantially more elaborate Artisanal Edition. The Artisanal issue was strictly limited to 39 copies in total, incorporating both 18K gold-painted-edge and 24K gold-leaf-edge examples. The present volume is copy 18/39 and is in the latter 24K state.
The Artisanal edition differs materially from the regular hardcover issues: it contains 240 pages rather than 192 and adds genuine leather binding, raised spine bands, handmade Robert Wu marbled endpapers, hand-finished page edges and the specially produced Lokta-paper slipcase.

SYNOPSIS
The Hanged God: Óðinn Grímnir forms Volume I of Shani Oates's Óðinn Trilogy, within Anathema Publishing's Northern Otherworld Series.
Oates approaches Óðinn through a combination of mythology, folklore, archaeology, anthropology, etymology and esoteric interpretation. Drawing particularly upon the Hávamál, Vǫluspá, Skáldskaparmál, Grímnismál, Heimskringla and Ynglinga Saga, she re-examines the familiar narratives surrounding Óðinn's acquisition of the runes and the mead of poetry.
At the centre of the work are three initiatory ordeals — Mound, Tree and Sacral Kingship — which Oates connects with death, transformation, magical knowledge and rebirth. The discussion considers Óðinn's relationship with the gallows and the dead, runic sorcery, necromancy, Hamingja and the concept of overcoming fate.
The book also offers deliberately unconventional readings of Yggdrasil, Sleipnir, Mímir and Valhöll, together with Óðinn's associations with wolves, sacrifice and ecstatic magical practice. Songs and charms, burial customs, giants and dwarfs, sacred kingship, the dangerous dead and the survival of older magical traditions are brought together in an attempt to reconstruct what Oates interprets as an initiatory Óðinnic cultus.
The volume is divided into:
Introduction; The Hávamál Cultus; Gold Mead: Elixir of Forbidden Enchantments; Of Mounds and the Dead that Walk; Yggdrassill: Dread Steed of the Damned; Riding the Gallows: Sorcerous Covenants; Appendices; Bibliography.
