Widely regarded as the most influential writer in the English language, Shakespeare wrote approximately 39 plays, 154 sonnets and several longer poems. As You Like It is among his best-known comedies and contains some of his most frequently quoted reflections on love, identity, performance and the stages of human life.
Illustrated By: Hugh Thomson
Illustrator Bio: Hugh Thomson RI was an Irish illustrator, born at Coleraine on 1 June 1860. He became celebrated for his refined pen-and-ink drawings and watercolour illustrations of English literary classics.
Thomson illustrated works by writers including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Oliver Goldsmith, J. M. Barrie and Elizabeth Gaskell. His illustrations are distinguished by their graceful figure drawing, careful attention to historical costume and affectionate recreation of Georgian and Victorian society.
His illustrations for Macmillan’s 1891 edition of Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford helped establish the decorative style later known as the “Cranford School” of book illustration. Thomson died on 7 May 1920 and remains one of the most collected British and Irish illustrators of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Synopsis: As You Like It is a pastoral comedy believed to have been written in 1599 and first printed in Shakespeare’s First Folio of 1623.
The play follows Rosalind, daughter of the banished Duke Senior, after she is driven from the court of her usurping uncle, Duke Frederick. Accompanied by her devoted cousin Celia and the court fool Touchstone, Rosalind seeks refuge in the Forest of Arden. For safety, she disguises herself as a young man named Ganymede, while Celia assumes the identity of his sister, Aliena.
In the forest they encounter Orlando, a young nobleman who has also fled persecution and who is deeply in love with Rosalind. Unaware of her disguise, Orlando agrees to be instructed by Ganymede in the ways of courtship, allowing Rosalind to test the sincerity and character of the man she loves.
Around them unfolds a lively series of romantic misunderstandings, philosophical debates and comic encounters. Among the forest’s inhabitants is the melancholy Jaques, whose reflections include the celebrated “All the world’s a stage” speech.
The Forest of Arden becomes a place of transformation in which social conventions are questioned, estranged families are reconciled and several interwoven courtships are brought to a joyful conclusion. Combining romance, disguise, wit and pastoral reflection, As You Like It remains one of Shakespeare’s most enduring and frequently performed comedies.
