1919 Later Issue of 1912 New Edtn signed Bumpus Ltd, Oxford Street Binding PETER PAN IN KENSINGTON GARDENS By J.M. Barrie Illus. Arthur Rackham
1919 Later Issue of 1912 New Edition signed Bumpus Ltd, Oxford Street Binding
PETER PAN IN KENSINGTON GARDENS
From The Little White Bird
A handsome and complete large-format copy of J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, illustrated by Arthur Rackham and attractively rebound by Bumpus Ltd, Oxford Street in brown half calf over cloth boards.
First issued in this redesigned form in 1912, the “New Edition” is one of the most desirable presentations of Rackham's celebrated Peter Pan illustrations. It contains 50 tipped-in colour plates, each with its captioned tissue guard, together with full-page black-and-white drawings and further line illustrations throughout. Unlike the 1906 edition, in which the colour plates were grouped separately, the New Edition places them through the text; it also introduced a new colour frontispiece and seven additional full-page black-and-white illustrations.
The present copy is a later issue of the 1912 New Edition. The title page bears the imprint “Hodder & Stoughton Limited”, indicating publication in or after 1919 rather than the original 1912 issue. The large-format edition continued to be issued into the 1920s.
Of particular appeal is the signed Bumpus Ltd, Oxford Street binding: brown half calf with leather corners over tan cloth boards, gilt rules and lettering to the spine, marbled endpapers and gilt edges. The binding gives the volume considerable shelf presence while complementing Rackham's richly coloured plates.

Very Good - A handsome, complete copy in a signed Bumpus Ltd, Oxford Street half-calf binding. Brown calf spine and corners over tan cloth-covered boards, ruled and lettered in gilt, with marbled endpapers. Binding remains attractive and sound, with light rubbing, surface marking and minor wear to the leather and extremities consistent with age.
Contents complete with all 50 tipped-in colour plates and all 50 captioned tissue guards present. The colour plates are well preserved and retain strong colour. Scattered foxing and spotting to the text, principally affecting the title page, preliminaries and occasional margins, with some general age-toning; the illustrated plates themselves remain notably attractive.
The volume has been rebound and therefore does not retain the publisher's original green pictorial cloth or original pictorial endpapers.
A particularly appealing example for the collector of Arthur Rackham, illustrated books, Peter Pan material or fine bindings, combining the complete Rackham suite with a distinguished Bumpus binding.
Edition Note
Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens was first published with Rackham's illustrations in 1906. Hodder & Stoughton introduced a substantially redesigned “New Edition” in 1912, retaining the celebrated suite of 50 colour plates while integrating them through the text and adding a new colour frontispiece and seven full-page black-and-white drawings not present in the 1906 edition. Bibliographical authorities catalogue the 1912 New Edition at Latimore & Haskell p. 40 and Riall p. 114.
The wording “Hodder & Stoughton Limited” on the present title page identifies this copy as a later issue of that 1912 New Edition, dating from 1919 or afterwards.
Collation: pp. 126; 50 tipped-in colour plates, each with captioned tissue guard; full-page black-and-white illustrations and additional line drawings throughout.

Christie's, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens: A New Edition, bibliographical description
Author Bio: Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM (1860–1937), was a Scottish novelist and playwright best remembered as the creator of Peter Pan. The character first appeared in Barrie's 1902 novel The Little White Bird, before developing through the 1904 stage play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and the later novel Peter and Wendy.
Illustrated By: Arthur Rackham
Illustrator Bio: Arthur Rackham RWS (1867–1939) was one of the leading illustrators of the Golden Age of British book illustration. His distinctive combination of expressive pen-and-ink drawing with delicate watercolour established him as one of the defining illustrators of fantasy and children's literature. His illustrations for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens are among his best-known achievements; the success of the original 1906 publication helped establish his international reputation.
Synopsis: Drawn principally from the Peter Pan chapters of Barrie's earlier The Little White Bird, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens presents an earlier and more dreamlike incarnation of Peter than the familiar hero of Neverland.
As an infant, Peter leaves his human home and makes his way to Kensington Gardens, where he inhabits a magical world existing alongside everyday London. Neither wholly child nor bird, Peter becomes a “Betwixt-and-Between,” living among birds and fairies after the Gardens close to ordinary visitors. He encounters Solomon Caw, the fairy community and Maimie Mannering, while gradually confronting the distance between his enchanted existence and the human home he has left behind.
Barrie's mixture of whimsy and melancholy is particularly well suited to Rackham's imagery: fantastic trees, fairies, birds and shadowy Kensington landscapes transform the familiar London park into one of the defining visual worlds of early twentieth-century illustrated literature.
