DESCRIPTION
A Druid in Psychologists Clothing
An exceptional example of Anathema Publishing's highest-specification Artisanal issue: Ian C. Edwards's study of the British psychologist E. Graham Howe and the Druidic and metaphysical ideas Edwards identifies beneath Howe's psychological writings. Published in 2023, the volume combines modern esoteric scholarship with an unusually elaborate fine binding and a fully illustrated interior. This is Copy No. 4, with the author's signed and numbered tipped-in limitation plate. The publisher's current catalogue records the completed Artisanal Edition as strictly limited to 24 copies. The book is bound in Petrol-Blue Nappa lamb leather with raised spine bands, extensive gilt blocking and embossing, bespoke hand-marbled endpapers by Freya Scott, and a matching leather-and-marbled-paper slipcase. With forewords by John Michael Greer and Jungian analyst Stanton Marlan, and illustrations throughout by Philipp Müller (aka Black Philipp), the work occupies an unusual intersection of the history of psychology, Jungian and psychoanalytic thought, Western esotericism, spirituality and modern Druidry. A highly attractive production and one of the scarcer deluxe issues from Anathema Publishing.

Slipcase bound in Petrol-Blue Nappa Lamb Genuine Leather + the same Hand-Made Paper as the Endpapers. Bibliographical Note: The production history of the Artisanal Edition is of particular interest. The printed colophon in the present copy states that the first printing was intended to comprise approximately 1,000 Collector's Edition copies and approximately 50 Artisanal Edition hardcover copies. The tipped-in limitation plate itself, however, is numbered simply “COPY #4” and gives no denominator. In a publisher announcement dated 14 April 2023, Anathema stated that it then intended to manufacture approximately 35–45 Artisanal copies, with production divided into two distinct batches owing to the specialist nature and additional production time required for the edition. Anathema Publishing's current official catalogue records the completed Artisanal Edition as “Strictly limited to 24 copies.” The differing contemporary figures therefore appear to document the evolving production intentions for this particularly labour-intensive edition; the publisher's present figure of 24 copies is used here as the final issued limitation. Earlier bookseller descriptions have occasionally recorded a limitation of 26 copies. The present book itself does not state “4/26” or "4/24"; its signed limitation plate records only Copy No. 4. Please see Photos as part of condition report.

SYNOPSIS
A Druid in Psychologist's Clothing re-examines the life and ideas of E. Graham Howe (1897–1975), the British physician, psychologist and psychotherapist whose unconventional work crossed the boundaries between psychology, philosophy, spirituality and mystical thought. Howe wrote extensively on psychotherapy and the nature of human experience and moved in an intellectual world that included figures such as Alan Watts, Jiddu Krishnamurti and R. D. Laing. Despite thirteen books and numerous articles, he has remained comparatively neglected in conventional histories of twentieth-century psychology. Edwards places Howe within the wider development of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, considering his thought alongside Sigmund Freud, C. G. Jung and Alfred Adler, while examining themes including depression, love, relationship, self-knowledge, time, war and psychotherapy as a way of being. Central to Edwards's interpretation is the argument that Howe's psychological writings were informed by a deeper Druidic and metaphysical framework. The latter sections of the book explore this dimension through subjects including Awen, elemental psychology, the Three Circles of Manifestation, the Druid's Prayer and meditation. Rather than treating Druidry simply as a historical or institutional tradition, Edwards presents Howe's approach as a practical philosophy concerned with relationship, psychological suffering and what Howe understood as the art of living. The result is both a reassessment of an overlooked figure in British psychology and a study of the intersection between psychotherapy, metaphysics and modern Druidic thought. Forewords are contributed by author and Druid John Michael Greer and Jungian analyst Stanton Marlan.
