Sale Price: £2,000.00 Original Price: £2,300.00

2022 Nemesis Edition
THE HEKATAEON

A particularly scarce and visually arresting deluxe issue of Jack Grayle’s The Hekataeon, one of the most sought-after modern grimoires devoted to Hekate. Published in 2022 as the Cassidy Deluxe or Nemesis Edition, this issue was limited to only 35 leatherbound copies, each privately bound by the author in emerald-green leather with speckled fore-edges, marbled endpapers and a sewn-in ribbon marker.
This edition substantially expands and refines the earlier text, incorporating ten illustrations by Rowan E. Cassidy, twenty-nine revised sigils, corrected Greek text and three additional Hekatean workings contributed by Samuel David, Zemaemmi Djehuti and Amaya Rourke. Conceived as both a working grimoire and an altar-worthy devotional object, the Nemesis Edition occupies an important position in the publication history of The Hekataeon, immediately preceding the later Medea, Eos and Styx issues.
An especially desirable author-embellished example. The title page is extensively signed, inscribed and sigilized by Jack Grayle in blue and orange ink, including the inscription:
“May Hekate Bless You Ever & Always!”
together with a series of large hand-drawn magical devices and Grayle’s signature. The inscription is not personalised to a named recipient.
The printed colophon states “35 leatherbound volumes of which this copy is _____”; on this example the limitation number was left blank. The book was purchased by Books That Expand The Mind from Miskatonic Books on 13 April 2023 as the Nemesis Edition. The original purchaser subsequently contacted Grayle on 27 May 2023 specifically regarding the absent number and recalls Grayle explaining that some copies had inadvertently been left unnumbered. The purchaser’s contemporaneous enquiry survives, although Grayle’s reply is no longer available. The original Miskatonic Books purchase invoice is retained.

Limited Edition: One of 35 leatherbound copies; this example unnumbered within the stated limitation
Signed: Yes — extensively signed, inscribed and sigilized by Jack Grayle on the title page

A striking and very well-preserved example of this extremely limited deluxe issue.
The privately bound emerald-green leather remains clean, supple and attractive, with the natural grain, wrinkles and character associated with the handmade leather binding. Black pictorial and calligraphic decoration to the upper board remains strong, with gilt device to the spine and further decoration to the lower board. Corners and board edges are sharp, with no significant rubbing, splitting or loss apparent.
Speckled fore-edges remain clean and bright. The richly marbled endpapers are exceptionally well preserved. Internally the volume is clean and sound, with no material foxing, staining or annotation observed beyond the extensive author inscription and sigils to the title page. Cassidy’s monochrome illustrations remain crisp and well printed.
The title-page inscription, signature and hand-drawn sigils are strong and unfaded and form a particularly attractive feature of this copy.
A handsome, apparently little-used example of one of the rarest deluxe states of The Hekataeon.

Binding Features: Privately bound by Jack Grayle in emerald-green leather; speckled fore-edges; marbled endpapers; sewn-in ribbon marker.
Illustrations: Ten illustrations by Rowan E. Cassidy; twenty-nine revised sigils.

Author Bio: Jack Grayle is a writer, ritualist and researcher whose work explores the magical, religious and mythic traditions of antiquity. His writing draws particularly upon Mediterranean religion, classical literature, late-antique ritual practice and the surviving magical papyri, placing ancient sources in dialogue with contemporary devotional and operative practice.
The Hekataeon has become his best-known work and one of the more influential contemporary grimoires devoted to Hekate.

Illustrated By: Rowan E. Cassidy
Illustrator Bio: Rowan E. Cassidy brings to his practice a strong grounding in classical draughtsmanship, calligraphy and design. His background includes studies in fine art at Australia’s National Art School and Communication Design at James Cook University, together with design work for feature films and exhibitions in Australia and Indonesia.
Cassidy’s dark, gestural imagery is particularly well suited to the chthonic and visionary character of The Hekataeon, and the ten illustrations commissioned for this edition form an important part of the Nemesis Edition’s distinctive identity.

Synopsis: The Hekataeon is a devotional and operative grimoire centred upon Hekate, the liminal Greek goddess of crossroads, night, witchcraft, the dead and the passage between worlds. Grayle presents the work not simply as a collection of spells but as an initiatory system through which the practitioner progressively enters the service and mysteries of the goddess.
Drawing inspiration from Mediterranean mythology, classical literature and the magical practices of late antiquity — including material associated with the Greek Magical Papyri — the book combines hymns, prayers, invocations, consecrations, ritual scripts and practical sorcery into a single structured path.
Its four principal stages lead the practitioner through the establishment of relationships with three spirit allies, the creation and consecration of nine ritual tools, contemplation and practical engagement with twenty-seven epithets of Hekate, and a sequence of thirty-three magical workings. The system moves progressively from devotion and preparation toward increasingly complex initiatory and spirit-working practices.
Among its rites are workings concerned with the dead, chthonic powers, divine and intermediary spirits, sacred images and the forces associated with Hekate’s many forms. Figures and currents drawn from Greek and Greco-Egyptian religion appear throughout, including the witch-queens Medea, Kirke and Pasiphaë, together with daimons and underworld beings invoked within the broader Hekatean current.
The 2022 Nemesis Edition further develops the work through revised sigils, corrected Greek, additional ritual material and Rowan E. Cassidy’s atmospheric illustrations. In its privately bound leather form, it was conceived as much as a ritual object as a book: a deliberately imposing, altar-worthy manifestation of Grayle’s Hekatean system.
