1904 1st Edtn Nicols THE BIRTHDAY BOOK OF DESTINY By Sepharial Good Esoteric
1904 1st Edition Nicols ,
THE BIRTHDAY BOOK OF DESTINY
Compiled from Ancient Hermetic and Rosicrucian Sources, Arranged and Interpreted. A scarce Sepharial title, recorded by Google Books as published by Nichols & Company in 1904, 253 pages; specialist bibliography gives the edition as 8vo (17 cm), pp. xvi, 253 [1].
A compact Edwardian occult-astrological birthday book, offering a reading for each day of the year and framed in explicitly Hermetic and Rosicrucian terms. A particularly pleasing point in this copy is the faint oval bookseller’s stamp on the title page: J. Wooderson, Bookseller. Period sources place Wooderson at 23 Oxford Street and describe him as “formerly Nichols and Co.” or as carrying on the bookselling business formerly conducted by Nichols & Co.; earlier occult press notices also place Nichols & Co. at 23 Oxford Street before Wooderson appears, so the stamp gives the copy a neat trade association with the successor occult bookselling business.
By Sepharial
Author Bio: Sepharial was the pseudonym of Walter Gorn Old (1864–1929), an English astrologer and occult writer whose works helped shape the late Victorian and Edwardian astrology revival. He wrote extensively on astrology, numerology, divination, and related esoteric subjects under the Sepharial name.
Provenance: J. Wooderson bookseller stamp on Title page, appealing occult-trade provenance via the Wooderson stamp. Previous owner names on prelim blank page.
Synopsis: The undated Nichols issue is generally recorded as 1904; Google Books records 253 pages, while bibliographic sources note the edition as 8vo / c.17 cm, pp. xvi, 253 [1]. Period advertisements show the book being sold by Nichols from 34 Hart Street, W.C. at 3s. 6d. net. Specialist commentary describes it as never reprinted and among Sepharial’s scarcer books.
Binding: Hardcover, duodecimo or twelvemo (12mo 5 × 7 3⁄8 in 127 × 187 mm )
Note: Binding/size selection follows standard bibliographic conventions and is approximate; exact measurements may vary.

Good - Original gilt-stamped textured cloth, rubbed at extremities and joints, with wear to corners and edges; front-board gilt remains clear and legible. Ownership inscriptions to half-title. Preliminaries and title page show scattered foxing and age-toning. The photographed prelims include the title, printer’s leaf, dedication page, and bound-in errata slip. Inner gutters show visible wear in the photographs, but the book presents as a sound, usable copy overall.
An honest, unrestored early occult copy with real shelf presence despite wear: not a fine example, but a desirable working copy of a scarce Sepharial title, suitable for collectors of astrology, Hermetic and Rosicrucian literature, and Edwardian esoterica.
