Author Bio: The Brothers Grimm, Jacob Grimm (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859), were German scholars, philologists, lexicographers and collectors of traditional folklore. Their Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children’s and Household Tales), first published in 1812, became one of the most influential collections of European fairy tales.
Among the stories associated with their collections are Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, The Frog Prince, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. Their work had a lasting influence on the study of folklore, German language and literature, as well as on the later development of children’s publishing.
Illustrated By: Kay Nielsen
Illustrator Bio: Kay Rasmus Nielsen (1886–1957) was a Danish illustrator and one of the outstanding figures of the Golden Age of Illustration. His highly decorative style combined elongated figures, intricate pattern, dramatic silhouettes and influences drawn from Art Nouveau, Japanese printmaking and European theatrical design.
Nielsen illustrated a number of important gift books during the early twentieth century and later worked for Walt Disney Studios, contributing concept artwork to Fantasia. His illustrations for the Brothers Grimm remain among his most admired and collectible book illustrations.
Synopsis: Hansel and Gretel and Other Stories presents a selection of tales by the Brothers Grimm accompanied by Kay Nielsen’s distinctive illustrations.
Alongside Hansel and Gretel, the collection includes The Six Swans, Little Brother and Little Sister, The Fisherman and His Wife, The Drummer, Rosebud, Snowdrop, The Goose Girl, The Valiant Little Tailor and other Grimm tales.
Nielsen’s elaborate colour plates and decorative designs give the volume a character quite distinct from more conventional illustrated editions of Grimm, combining fairy-tale subject matter with some of the most imaginative book illustration of the early twentieth century.
