A PICTURE AND STORY BOOK FOR BOYS AND GIRLS
An appealing early volume of the long-running Tiger Tim's Annual, this 1924 issue is the third cover-dated annual in the series and an attractive survival from the golden age of British children's annual publishing.
Issued from the offices of Tiger Tim's Weekly at Fleetway House, Farringdon Street, London, the volume is presented in striking glazed pictorial boards with green cloth spine. The vivid front cover shows Tiger Tim signalling the departure of a train carrying his familiar animal companions, while the rear board carries a full-page period advertisement for Green's Sponge Mixture.
Lavishly illustrated throughout, the annual combines comic picture stories, children's fiction, verse and humorous pieces, with a colour frontispiece and numerous illustrations in colour, two-colour and black and white. Among the pieces shown are The Unlucky Spiders, The Brownie Boys and Old King Cole and The Real Father Christmas. A particularly attractive example of early British comic and juvenile publishing, retaining considerable period charm.
CONDITION, COLLATION & COPY NOTES
An attractive copy in the original glazed pictorial boards with green cloth spine. Front board remains notably bright and colourful, with rubbing, scuffing and wear principally to the edges and corners. Spine cloth with general rubbing and handling wear. Rear board age-soiled and marked, with the illustrated Green's Sponge Mixture advertisement remaining clear and complete.
Inner hinges show age-related wear and some opening at the gutters, with binding material visible in places. Previous owner's contemporary presentation inscription to the front endpaper: “From my mother with best love 1924”, together with the recipient's name and address.
Internally, the illustrated contents remain generally bright and well preserved for a children's annual of this age. Some light handling marks, scattered spotting and minor soiling, principally to the early and end pages. Colour frontispiece remains bright, and the numerous two-colour and black-and-white illustrations are clean and well defined. No colouring-in or other annotation noted beyond the ownership inscription.
A pleasing, unrestored-looking early Tiger Tim's Annual, particularly attractive for its bright pictorial front board, surviving cloth spine, colour frontispiece and well-preserved illustrated contents.

Tiger Tim's Annual was issued as the annual companion to Tiger Tim's Weekly. The first annual was cover-dated 1922 and the series continued through 1957. The annuals brought together the comic adventures of Tiger Tim and his companions with stories, verse, games and other material for younger readers. The 1924 volume is therefore one of the earliest issues in the series.
Tiger Tim had already become an established figure in British children's comics before the launch of Tiger Tim's Weekly. The character and the Bruin Boys originated with Julius Stafford Baker, while Herbert Sidney Foxwell became the artist most closely associated with Tiger Tim during much of the 1920s and early 1930s.

SYNOPSIS
A richly illustrated children's miscellany combining the comic adventures associated with Tiger Tim and his companions with humorous picture stories, short fiction, verse and seasonal tales.
The volume ranges from exuberant comic sequences featuring Tiger Tim, Mrs Bruin and their animal companions to imaginative pieces such as The Unlucky Spiders, The Brownie Boys and Old King Cole and the Christmas story The Real Father Christmas. The stories are accompanied by extensive illustration, including full-page two-colour artwork and a charming colour frontispiece depicting children dressed as rabbits seeking the way to the “Bunnies' Ball”.
Typical of the best British children's annuals of the inter-war period, the book was conceived as a substantial Christmas gift and offers a lively mixture of storytelling, visual humour and fantasy. Its combination of bold pictorial design and early British comic art gives the volume interest both as a children's book and as an example of popular publishing from the 1920s.

The annual contains work by a number of illustrators rather than a single credited artist. The Tiger Tim and Bruin Boys material of this period is particularly associated with British comic artist Herbert Sidney Foxwell (1890–1943), who succeeded the character's creator Julius Stafford Baker and became one of the principal artists responsible for the popularity and distinctive appearance of Tiger Tim and his animal companions.
Foxwell specialised in lively anthropomorphic animal characters and worked on Tiger Tim for many years. His energetic comic draughtsmanship became strongly identified with the series during its classic inter-war period. Individual illustrations within the present annual may, however, be by other contributors and should not all be attributed to Foxwell without specific signatures or documentary evidence.
