A substantial and appealing eighteenth-century biblical volume containing two closely related works from the celebrated Biblia Sacra Vulgatae Editionis Versione Belgica of the Franciscan Recollect scholar Wilhelmus Smits: his editions of the Book of Wisdom (Sapientia) and Ecclesiasticus or Sirach, both printed in 1749 at Antwerp and Amsterdam.
Smits's ambitious project combined the Latin Vulgate with a Dutch or Flemish vernacular version and extensive grammatical, literal, philological and critical commentary. Far more than a simple Bible translation, the series formed part of Smits's lifelong programme of Catholic biblical scholarship, drawing upon Hebrew, Greek, patristic and contemporary critical learning. Sapientia and Ecclesiasticus, two of the principal books of biblical wisdom literature, form a particularly coherent pair within the project. Bibliographical records identify Jan Caspar Philips as illustrator of the Sapientia edition.
Of particular interest is the engraved eighteenth-century ex-libris of the Franciscan Recollect theologian Franciscus Peri, a contemporary member of the same Provincia Germaniae Inferioris in which Smits himself served. Peri was a senior theological lector and compiler of a history of the Franciscan Recollect province. The provenance therefore places this copy within the scholarly Franciscan milieu for which Smits's biblical work was originally produced, considerably enhancing its historical and association interest.
The volume retains its handsome contemporary full calf binding, with raised bands, gilt floral spine compartments and gilt-lettered morocco label reading SMITS / SAPIENTIA / ECCLESIAST. Marbled endpapers and coloured edges survive. Two engraved allegorical frontispieces are present, together with an engraved armorial dedication plate to Maximilianus Antonius van der Noot, Bishop of Ghent. One of the frontispieces is signed by J. C. Philips.

The plate is inscribed substantially:
“Ex Bibliotheca R.P.F. Franci. Peri Ord. FF. Min. Rec. S.T. Lect. … ac Commiss. Curiae.”
Peri belonged to the Franciscan Recollect milieu of the Provincia Germaniae Inferioris, the same province named by Smits on the title pages of the present works. His ownership gives the volume unusually appropriate contemporary ecclesiastical and scholarly provenance.
Peri's engraved library plate was subsequently recorded in nineteenth-century ex-libris literature, confirming it as an established personal bookplate rather than a general institutional library mark.
CONDITION, COLLATION & COPY NOTES
A handsome and appealing contemporary calf-bound copy of these two substantial 1749 Smits biblical works, bound together.
Binding with general rubbing, scuffing and surface marking consistent with age, heavier wear to extremities and corners, with small areas of exposed board. Raised spine bands and much of the original gilt decoration remain attractive and distinct; gilt-lettered morocco title label present. Boards remain attached and the text block is sound and firm.
Internally generally clean and well preserved, with expected age-toning, occasional light spotting, foxing and minor marks from use. Both title pages present. Two engraved allegorical frontispieces present, one signed J. C. Philips, together with the engraved armorial dedication plate. Extensive prolegomena, biblical text and scholarly commentary present.
Marbled endpapers remain attractive. Two old paper inventory labels to the front pastedown. Engraved ex-libris of Franciscus Peri, Franciscan Recollect theologian and contemporary of Smits, providing particularly appropriate eighteenth-century provenance.
A pleasing scholarly copy with considerable period character, the external wear reflecting historical use while the binding, text and engraved material remain notably well preserved.

SYNOPSIS
This volume brings together two major works of deuterocanonical biblical wisdom literature.
The Book of Wisdom, traditionally known as the Wisdom of Solomon or Sapientia Salomonis, is a Hellenistic Jewish work probably composed at Alexandria. It explores divine wisdom, righteousness, immortality, idolatry, providence and the relationship between God and humanity. Accepted as canonical within the Catholic and Eastern Christian traditions, it commonly appears among the Apocrypha in Protestant editions.
Ecclesiasticus, also known as the Wisdom of Jesus Son of Sirach or simply Sirach, was composed in Hebrew by Jesus ben Sira in the early second century BC and subsequently translated into Greek by his grandson. It is one of the richest surviving expressions of Jewish wisdom teaching, treating moral conduct, friendship, family, education, speech, wealth, worship and the praise of Israel's ancestors.
Smits does not merely reproduce these texts. He surrounds them with extensive prolegomena and grammatical, literal and critical annotations, placing the Vulgate within the wider history of biblical transmission and interpretation. The resulting volume is therefore as much a work of eighteenth-century Catholic philology and textual scholarship as a biblical edition.
Bound together in contemporary calf and retaining their engraved material, the two works form a handsome and intellectually coherent survival from Smits's ambitious Versio Belgica project. The contemporary ownership of the Franciscan theologian Franciscus Peri gives this particular copy an especially appropriate provenance within the scholarly world from which the books emerged.
AUTHOR BIO
Wilhelmus Smits (1704–1770) was a Franciscan Recollect theologian, orientalist, biblical scholar and exegete. Born at Kevelaer in the Duchy of Guelders, he entered the Order of Friars Minor while still a young man and devoted much of his scholarly career to Scripture, biblical languages and textual criticism.
During the 1730s and 1740s Smits published a succession of learned biblical dissertations examining the Hebrew and Greek textual traditions and their relationship to the Latin Vulgate. His work placed him within the important eighteenth-century Catholic movement toward increasingly sophisticated philological and textual study of Scripture.
At the request of Thomas Philip Wallrad de Hénin-Liétard d'Alsace, Archbishop of Mechelen, Smits undertook an ambitious translation and commentary on the Bible under the general title Biblia Sacra Vulgatae Editionis Versione Belgica. The project presented the Vulgate alongside a Dutch/Flemish version, accompanied by extensive grammatical, literal, critical and philological notes.
Smits completed thirteen biblical books before his death in 1770. The project was continued by Petrus van Hove, his former pupil, collaborator and successor in the Franciscan programme of sacred philology.

Jan Caspar Philips (c. 1690–1775) was an Amsterdam engraver and draughtsman active during the first half of the eighteenth century. He produced book illustrations, portraits, architectural and allegorical engravings for Dutch and Flemish publishers.
