DESCRIPTION DES EXPERIENCES DE LA MACHINE AEROSTATIQUE DE MM. DE MONTGOLFIER
Volume 1
By M. Faujas de Saint-Fond

Author Bio: Barthélemy Faujas de Saint-Fond (1741–1819) was a French geologist, traveller, and early chronicler of ballooning. His Description des expériences de la machine aérostatique de MM. de Montgolfier was published in two volumes in 1783–1784.

Provenance: Bookplate of Harold Roxbee Cox, Baron Kings Norton of Wotton Underwood.

Synopsis: An important contemporary account of the Montgolfier balloon experiments and one of the earliest substantial printed works on practical aerostation. This copy is the 1784 Le Francq issue of Volume I of Faujas de Saint-Fond’s two-volume work. The text records the Montgolfiers’ pioneering hot-air balloon experiments of 1783 and includes discussion of related developments in early ballooning, including hydrogen-balloon research associated with Jacques Charles. Faujas de Saint-Fond was among the earliest and most enthusiastic supporters of aerostation, and his work remains one of the key contemporary sources for the first balloon experiments.
