An attractive numbered copy of the first edition of Shani Oates's The Devil's Supper, published by Anathema Publishing in 2017: an extensively illustrated study of the Devil as theological adversary, folkloric figure, trickster, Faerie King, master of the Sabbat and enduring presence within European folk belief and Traditional Craft.
Moving from pre-history and the forbidden gods through medieval theology, heresy, Faerie lore, witchcraft, demonology and the Grande Sabbat, Oates examines the changing masks assumed by the Devil across religion, folklore and popular culture. Of particular interest to collectors of witchcraft, Luciferianism, Traditional Craft, folklore, occult history and finely produced contemporary esoterica.
This is the Standard Hardcover Edition, individually hand-numbered 155. The colophon states that the first printing comprised approximately 600 numbered copies across three separate states — Standard, Deluxe and ‘Cockaigne’ Artisanal — while Anathema's publisher archive records the completed Standard issue as limited to 514 copies. The present copy is identifiable as the Standard state by its metallic graphite bookcloth, blind-debossed front board and silver-foil lettering to the rounded spine.
CONDITION, COLLATION & COPY NOTES
A clean and attractive example of the scarce first-edition Standard hardcover. Bound in Bamberger Kaliko “Metallic Graphite” bookcloth, with blind-debossed design to the front board and silver-foil titling and devices to the rounded spine. Binding remains square and firm, with strong spine decoration and only very minor evidence of handling visible.
Neenah Red and Leno embossed endpapers remain clean and striking. Interior appears fresh and well preserved, with clean pages and illustrations and no significant marking, staining or wear observed.
276 pages, with colour elements and numerous black-and-white illustrations. Fine typography and design by G. McCaughry; extensively illustrated by Lupe Vasconcelos together with reproductions of historical works of art. Printed on Cougar Natural 160M archive-quality paper.
A handsome and increasingly difficult-to-source copy of the original hardbound issue, presenting very well both internally and externally.

SYNOPSIS
The Devil's Supper examines the Devil not as a single fixed theological personality, but as an extraordinarily adaptable figure whose identities have shifted across centuries of mythology, religion, folklore, witchcraft and popular imagination.
Oates traces this ambiguous adversary from forgotten and forbidden gods through medieval heresy and theology, Carnival and Cockaigne, Faerie lore and folk custom, the witch craze, demonological literature and the traditions of the Grande Sabbat. The Devil emerges variously as scapegoat, anti-hero, trickster, daemon, Faerie King, master of disguise, Great Opposer and master of ceremonies.
Drawing particularly upon the testimony, beliefs and traditions of those who feared, encountered or courted the Devil rather than relying solely upon ecclesiastical interpretations, the work explores the relationship between official demonology and vernacular belief. Feast and famine, sacred and profane, sin and retribution, illusion and revelation repeatedly exchange places as the Devil assumes yet another mask.
