DESCRIPTION
Ontological Graffiti
A substantial and visually striking first edition of Michael P. Bertiaux’s major work of Voudon Gnosis, occult philosophy and magical art, published by Fulgur Limited in 2016. The standard hardback issue was limited to 1,000 copies and has become one of the more sought-after modern publications associated with Bertiaux and the Voudon Gnostic current. More than forty years in development, Ontological Graffiti documents the magical and spiritualist work undertaken around the Hyde Park Lodge in Chicago during the period 1965–1975. Combining séances, lectures, ritual records, philosophical texts, drawings, collages and Bertiaux’s extraordinary visionary paintings, the volume occupies an unusual position between occult archive, art book and practical grimoire. A particularly substantial Fulgur production, printed on heavy art paper and extensively illustrated throughout, with 141 colour images, custom endpapers and Bertiaux’s distinctive artwork. Bound in shimmering deep red satin cloth with metallic decoration to the upper board and spine, complete with the original illustrated dust jacket, now preserved in a removable clear protective sleeve.

CONDITION, COLLATION & COPY NOTES
A clean, bright and attractive example of this substantial modern occult publication. The deep red satin cloth binding presents very well, with the metallic decoration to the upper board and spine remaining strong and clear. Boards and corners show only light signs of careful handling and shelf wear. The original illustrated dust jacket is present and has been preserved within a removable clear protective sleeve. The jacket presents strongly overall, with only minor signs of handling and wear at the extremities. Some surface reflections or apparent waviness visible in the photographs are associated with the clear protective sleeve. Internally the volume appears clean, bright and well preserved. The illustrated leaves retain strong colour and definition, with no significant foxing, staining or annotation apparent from inspection. Custom decorative endpapers present well. A handsome copy of one of Bertiaux’s most ambitious publications, notable for its scale, extensive colour illustration and combination of Voudon Gnostic philosophy, spiritist practice and visionary magical art. Extensively illustrated throughout with 141 colour images, together with numerous drawings, collages, diagrams and examples of Bertiaux’s magical artwork. Please see Photos as part of condition report.

SYNOPSIS
Ontological Graffiti is among Michael Bertiaux’s most substantial and ambitious works: a large-scale record of magical, artistic and spiritualist experimentation developed over more than four decades. At its centre is the work of the Hyde Park Lodge, a Chicago-based ritual collective active during the period 1965–1975 under the direction of Dr. Hector-Francois Jean Main. Bertiaux records the group’s séances, lectures, ritual investigations and encounters with what its members understood as spirits, Loa, transcendental consciousnesses and other forms of extra-dimensional intelligence. The textual material is accompanied by a remarkable body of visual work. Bertiaux produced large acrylic paintings, drawings, collages, diagrams and magical “passeports” intended to record, facilitate or deepen contact with the entities and states of consciousness encountered through the Lodge’s workings. The resulting volume moves between magical diary, philosophical treatise, spiritist archive and art-grimoire. Its subjects range across Voudon Gnosis, clairvoyance, alchemy, spiritism, consciousness, occult cartography, Gnostic physics, ritual art and methods of communication with what Bertiaux describes as “Other Minds.” Lavishly produced and extensively illustrated, Ontological Graffiti stands as both an important document of Bertiaux’s esoteric system and one of the more distinctive modern publications at the intersection of occult practice and visionary art.

AUTHOR BIO
Michael P. Bertiaux is an American occultist, philosopher, artist and esoteric teacher, best known as the author of The Voudon Gnostic Workbook and as one of the principal figures associated with the Voudon Gnostic current. Raised in an environment influenced by Theosophy and esoteric religion, Bertiaux studied philosophy in New Orleans before travelling to Haiti in the early 1960s. There he encountered Haitian spiritual traditions that would become a formative influence upon his subsequent magical, artistic and philosophical work. Bertiaux’s writings combine elements of Voudon, Gnosticism, ceremonial magic, spiritism, esoteric Christianity, metaphysics and highly individual systems of occult symbolism. His work is also inseparable from his visual art, which frequently functions not merely as illustration but as an integral component of his magical practice.
