A handsome limited edition of two of the best-known texts of the Western grimoire tradition, combining the Heptameron, or Magical Elements of Peter de Abano with the anonymous Arbatel of Magick. Published by Ouroboros Press at Seattle in 2003, this is the First Ouroboros Press Edition, here in the black-cloth trade binding with its original illustrated dust jacket.
The edition was conceived in the manner of an early printed magical book, with Renaissance-style typography, decorative woodcut initials, planetary figures, magical circles and angelic sigils. The frontispiece reproduces the traditional portrait of Peter de Abano from the Nuremberg Chronicle. The two works are presented together in a single volume and retain much of the visual character of their early printed sources. Specialist descriptions record the volume as approximately 200 pages, variously paginated.
This copy is hand-numbered 271 on the limitation leaf. The printed limitation statement itself does not specify the total number produced, and the present copy should therefore be catalogued simply as numbered copy 271. Bibliographical records elsewhere describe the cloth trade issue as comprising 1,000 hand-numbered copies.
CONDITION, COLLATION & COPY NOTES
Original black cloth hardcover with gilt titling/device, complete with the original printed dust jacket. Two separate works bound together in one volume.
The book itself presents very well. Interior leaves are clean and bright overall, with crisp typography, decorative initials, planetary figures, magical diagrams and sigils. No ownership inscriptions, annotations or significant staining. Binding appears sound and the text block clean.
Original white dust jacket with light general handling and surface marking, some rubbing and minor soiling, together with light creasing and wear at the edges and spine extremities. The jacket remains complete and attractive, with the large magical-circle design to the front panel and publisher's material to the rear and flaps.

A particularly appealing production from Ouroboros Press, combining two important early magical texts in a deliberately historicising fine-press presentation. SYNOPSIS
The Heptameron, or Magical Elements of Peter de Abano is a concise manual of ceremonial and planetary magic organised around the seven days of the week. Each day is associated with particular planetary and angelic rulers, spirits, winds, hours and ritual correspondences. The text gives magical circles, sigils, names of spirits, invocations and conjurations intended to provide the practitioner with a practical framework for ritual operations.
Its structure is especially concerned with the correct timing and ordering of magical ceremonies: the angel governing the day, the angels of the air, planetary hours and the appropriate ritual forms are set out systematically. This Ouroboros edition incorporates the traditional magical diagrams and planetary imagery associated with the text.
Bound with it is the anonymous Arbatel of Magick, a markedly different but equally influential early magical work. The Arbatel is arranged as forty-nine aphorisms in seven septenaries, combining Christian devotional thought, natural philosophy and practical magic. It is particularly celebrated for its account of the Olympic Spirits, planetary intelligences to whom different aspects of the created world are assigned.
Together, the Heptameron and Arbatel offer two contrasting expressions of Renaissance and early-modern magic: the first strongly ritual, angelic and planetary; the second aphoristic, philosophical and devotional. Their long association makes this Ouroboros Press edition an especially attractive volume for collectors of grimoires, ceremonial magic and modern esoteric fine printing.
AUTHOR BIO
Peter de Abano (c. 1250–c. 1316), also known as Pietro d'Abano, was an Italian physician, philosopher and astrologer associated particularly with Padua. His historical reputation combined medicine, natural philosophy and astrology, and a substantial body of later magical literature came to circulate under his name.
The Heptameron is traditionally attributed to Peter de Abano, although the attribution is not treated as secure by modern scholarship. Its association with his name nevertheless became firmly established in the early printed grimoire tradition.
Translator Bio
Robert Turner (fl. 1654–1665) was a seventeenth-century English astrologer, botanist, translator and publisher of occult and astrological works. His English translations helped make a number of Continental magical texts available to an English readership during the seventeenth century.
Turner's translation of the Heptameron appeared in 1655 and became one of the principal English-language forms through which the text circulated among later students of ceremonial magic.
