SYNOPSIS
At the centre of Sigrun & The Mist is Jack Grayle’s full-length play in blank verse, drawing upon Icelandic legendary material and the figure of Sigrun, the Valkyrie. Set within a mythic northern world of warriors, princes, supernatural beings and gods, the drama explores fate, love, mortality, obligation and the tension between individual choice and destiny. David Koffer’s retelling of Egil & Asmund provides the traditional narrative background to Grayle’s dramatic interpretation. Shani Oates follows with Sigrun and Mist: A Commentary, an extensive study of the Valkyrie tradition, Norse warfare, seiðr and associated magical practices. Her contribution is supplemented by Two Bindrunes, devised specifically for engagement with the themes and magical current of the work. The final sections turn toward the visual and practical dimensions of the book. Klara Wolfe discusses her embodiment of Sigrun; Nicola Huffstickler examines the tintype and ambrotype process used for the photographic sequence; and Wolfe concludes with the Sigrun Praxis included in this Deluxe issue. The result is an interdisciplinary work combining dramatic poetry, mythology, occult commentary, traditional magical practice and historic photographic techniques.

AUTHOR BIO
Jack Grayle is an author and practitioner of contemporary occultism whose work draws upon ancient religious traditions and their modern magical interpretation. He is particularly associated with The Hekataeon, his influential work devoted to the goddess Hekate. Sigrun & The Mist extends his approach into the mythological and magical traditions of northern Europe. CONTRIBUTORS Shani Oates is an author, researcher and practitioner associated with the traditional witchcraft current of the Clan of Tubal Cain. Her contribution comprises the principal esoteric commentary together with Two Bindrunes devised for the work. David Koffer contributes a modern retelling of Egil & Asmund, providing the traditional narrative source against which Grayle’s dramatic treatment may be read. Nicola Huffstickler created the book’s photographic sequence using the historic wet-plate processes of tintype and ambrotype, with Klara Wolfe appearing as Sigrun. Klara Wolfe also contributes Becoming Sigrun and, in this Deluxe issue, the concluding Sigrun Praxis.

ILLUSTRATOR
Rowan E. Cassidy
Rowan E. Cassidy contributed the illustrative work to the volume, including the dragon design used as part of the book’s binding decoration. PHOTOGRAPHER — NICOLA HUFFSTICKLER Nicola Huffstickler created the book’s sequence of ten photographic studies using historic wet-plate processes, principally tintype and ambrotype. These deliberately antiquarian photographic techniques give the images a material and visual character markedly different from modern digital photography and form an integral part of the book’s interpretation of the Sigrun figure. KLARA WOLFE Klara Wolfe appears throughout the photographic sequence as Sigrun and contributes a personal account of embodying the character for Huffstickler’s camera. For the Deluxe issue she also contributes an additional Valkyrie ritual unavailable in the standard edition.
