Sacrosancti Concilii Tridentini
Edition / Date Note:
Undated 17th-century Remondini edition. 1699 is used as the conventional catalogue date for marketplace purposes, following WorldCat/OCLC and several institutional records; corresponding copies have also been dated c.1660, c.1670 and 1698. The present copy is certainly no later than 1724 from the dated acquisition inscription.
Title: SACROSANCTI CONCILII TRIDENTINI CANONES ET DECRETA
with INDEX LIBRORUM PROHIBITORUM
A substantial and appealing 17th-century Bassano edition of the canons and decrees of the Council of Trent, one of the defining documentary monuments of the Catholic Reformation, here supplemented by papal bulls, biblical and canon-law references, ancillary Tridentine material, Maurizio de Gregorio’s Hyacinthus, the Margarita Concilii Tridentini, and the separately titled 72-page Index Librorum Prohibitorum.
PROVENANCE
With repeated early ownership inscriptions of Joannes Baptista Bonafide, including the Latin acquisition note “emi anno 1724” — “I bought [it] in the year 1724” — together with a devotional Italian verse:
Piaga che vien dal Ciel non porta doglia,
a me basta il saper che Dio lo voglia.
Approximately: “A wound that comes from Heaven brings no grief; it is enough for me to know that God wills it.”
Bonafide is possibly identifiable with Fra Giovanni Battista Bonafide da Torino, recorded as Provincial Minister of the Observant Friars Minor in 1703; this identification is plausible but remains unconfirmed.
Later owned by Count Gioachino Toesca di Castellazzo (1838–1914), Turin lawyer, collector and prominent participant in the city’s artistic and cultural institutions, with his manuscript ownership inscription dated 1863.
CONDITION, COLLATION & COPY NOTES
A complete and internally attractive 17th-century copy in contemporary full parchment over boards, with manuscript title to spine.
The binding shows substantial evidence of historical use, including rubbing, age-soiling and staining, wear and chipping to the extremities and corners, and loss at the head of the spine with portions of the underlying sewing/support structure exposed. Boards remain attached. White endpapers with early manuscript ownership inscriptions, numbering and other historical marks.
Internally considerably better preserved than the exterior binding. The title page, preliminaries, principal text, supplementary Margarita material and separately titled Index Librorum Prohibitorum are all present. Paper generally sound and well margined, with expected age-toning, scattered spotting and staining, occasional handling marks and other signs of historical use. Printing remains strong and legible throughout.
With full-page woodcut of the Resurrection of Christ, together with woodcut printer’s devices, decorative initials, headpieces and tailpieces.
The principal numbered text concludes correctly at p.308. The supplementary unnumbered material is present, followed by the separately titled and separately paginated Index Librorum Prohibitorum, which concludes at p.72 with FINIS and terminal ornament.
Complete against the published bibliographical collation.
Bibliographical Note:
The edition is undated in the volume.
The corresponding SBN record describes an edition with the same principal bibliographical structure: *[16], 308, [44], 72 pp., octavo, signatures ⁸ A–2C⁸ 2D⁴, with the full-page woodcut and separately titled Index Librorum Prohibitorum.
Modern bibliographical authorities differ over the exact date. Closely corresponding Remondini copies are catalogued as 1699 by WorldCat/OCLC and several institutional libraries, while other sources assign dates including c.1660, c.1670 and 1698.
For commercial database and marketplace purposes, 1699 is used as the conventional date, while the descriptive text retains the bibliographically more cautious attribution of an undated 17th-century Remondini edition, certainly printed before 1724.

SYNOPSIS
The Council of Trent, held intermittently between 1545 and 1563, was the great ecumenical council of the 16th-century Catholic Church and a defining event of the Counter-Reformation. Convened against the background of the Protestant Reformation and demands for internal ecclesiastical reform, its decrees addressed doctrine, sacramental theology, clerical discipline, education, Church administration and the reform of religious practice. Its decisions remained fundamental to Catholic theology and governance for centuries.
This edition is considerably more than a simple printing of the conciliar decrees. Orazio Luzi’s compilation presents the canons and decrees with extensive references to Scripture, canon law and earlier ecclesiastical authority. It also incorporates the Descriptio Tridentinae Civitatis, papal bulls concerning the convocation, conclusion and implementation of the Council, catalogues and documentary material relating to its participants, Maurizio de Gregorio’s Hyacinthus, and the Margarita Concilii Tridentini.
Of particular historical and collecting interest is the separately titled Index Librorum Prohibitorum. The Index formed part of the Catholic Church’s machinery for the regulation and prohibition of printed works and records authors and books considered heretical, doctrinally dangerous or otherwise unsuitable for Catholic readers. Its presence gives this volume considerable crossover appeal to collectors of censorship, banned books, the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, ecclesiastical history and the history of ideas.
The copy is further distinguished by its early provenance. Joannes Baptista Bonafide recorded his purchase of the volume in 1724, while a later ownership inscription records the book in the possession of Count Gioachino Toesca di Castellazzo in 1863.
AUTHOR BIO
Orazio Luzi (1541–1569), Latinised as Horatius Lucius Calliensis, was an Italian jurist and archpriest associated with Cagli. His edition of the decrees of the Council of Trent arranged the conciliar texts with extensive biblical, canonical and ecclesiastical references, creating a practical reference work through which Tridentine legislation continued to circulate in later editions.
Although Luzi died only a few years after the conclusion of the Council, his editorial framework continued to be reprinted and enlarged by later publishers and compilers. The present Remondini edition incorporates additional papal bulls, indexes, historical material and supplementary texts.
ILLUSTRATOR
Anonymous
No named woodcut artist is recorded for the edition. The volume contains a full-page woodcut of the Resurrection of Christ together with numerous decorative woodcut initials, printer’s devices, headpieces and tailpieces.
