A substantial and visually distinctive first edition of this extensive eighteenth-century Capuchin course of moral theology, issued at Bologna and Lucca between 1775 and 1779 in eight tomes, here preserved together in six matching contemporary full-vellum volumes.
The work was principally composed by the Capuchin theologian Francesco dalla Pieve d'Albenga, former Provincial of the Genoese Province. Contemporary prefatory material in the first tome records that Francesco had died before publication of the work was completed and that his manuscripts were subsequently entrusted for preparation and publication. Tomes I–VI retain Francesco's authorship, while Tomes VII–VIII are explicitly issued under Claudio dalla Pieve, apparently representing the continuation or completion of Francesco's theological programme.
A particularly remarkable feature is the extensive programme of engraved allegorical plates and diagrammatic theological tables. These were not merely decorative additions: Francesco's own prefatory material specifically describes graphic tables placed at the beginnings of the individual treatises as an intentional means of elucidating the structure of the work. They form a sophisticated eighteenth-century system of visual theology, mapping such subjects as the virtues, sin, natural and ecclesiastical law, the Commandments, justice, property, restitution, the Sacraments and ecclesiastical discipline.
Among the more unusual subjects treated graphically are the acquisition and division of property under civil, canon and private law; clerical ownership and benefices; ecclesiastical jurisdiction; confession and penance; and solicitation to sexual misconduct in connection with confession. The resulting combination of theology, canon law, moral casuistry and visual information design gives the work interest considerably beyond the conventional market for eighteenth-century theological texts.
PROVENANCE
Contemporary manuscript ex-libris of the Convent of San Giovanni Battista, Saluzzo: Ex Libris Conventus S. Joannis Baptistae Salutiarum. San Giovanni was the historic Dominican convent at Saluzzo. The Dominicans occupied the house from the fourteenth century until its suppression by government decree on 16 August 1802. The provenance is particularly appropriate for a substantial teaching text in moral theology and canon law. Historical documentation of the convent records closely comparable ownership formulas, including Conventus Sancti Ioannis Salutiarum.
CONDITION, COLLATION & COPY NOTES
A substantial and attractive set of all eight textual tomes, bound contemporaneously as six volumes in full vellum with manuscript titles and numbering to the spines and blue-sprayed edges. Bindings remain coherent and well preserved overall, with expected age-soiling, staining, rubbing, handling marks and minor vellum distortion consistent with age and use.
Internally generally very good, with variable age-toning, scattered spotting and foxing, occasional staining and handling marks. The text remains sound, legible and textually complete throughout. Engraved material generally gives strong, clear impressions with good margins.
All eight textual tomes are complete.
The illustration programme has now been physically collated. Thirty-six of thirty-eight engraved plates/frontispieces are present. The two absent engraved leaves occur in Tome V and correspond to pp.7–8 and 13–14; the adjoining leaves, pp.6/9 and pp.12/15 respectively, clearly establish their positions. No textual loss is associated with these omissions.
In addition to the engraved plates/frontispieces, 22 diagrammatic theological tables have been identified throughout the set, giving 58 surviving visual elements in total.
Tome I lacks the front free endpaper. Otherwise a remarkably coherent surviving set with attractive contemporary institutional provenance.

The Lectionum Theologico-Moralium is an extensive systematic course in Catholic moral theology, designed principally for the education and practical use of clergy. Its individual lectures and dissertations address the relationship between Christian doctrine, moral obligation, canon law and the everyday problems confronting confessors, preachers and ecclesiastical administrators.
The work proceeds through the virtues and vices, conscience, sin, natural and positive law, the Ten Commandments, ecclesiastical precepts, clerical states, benefices, justice, ownership, contracts, restitution and the acquisition and transfer of property. Later sections turn extensively to the Sacraments, confession, penance and ecclesiastical discipline.
Particularly notable is its treatment of practical questions in both theology and law: ownership by clergy and members of households; benefices and ecclesiastical property; possession and usufruct; prescription; hunting, fishing and treasure-finding; civil and canon jurisdiction; sexual morality; and misconduct connected with the sacrament of confession.
Its most distinctive feature is the extensive use of graphic tables and allegorical engravings as instruments of instruction. Categories of law, virtue, sin, justice, property and sacramental theology are arranged visually into hierarchical systems, allowing the reader to comprehend complicated relationships at a glance. In this respect the work stands at an unusual intersection of post-Tridentine moral theology, canon law, mnemonic pedagogy and the history of information design.

Francesco dalla Pieve d'Albenga was an eighteenth-century Capuchin theologian and former Provincial of the Genoese Province of the Order. The formal authorization preserved in this set, issued at Cesena on 1 April 1779 by Fr. Erhardus a Radkerspurgo, Minister General of the Capuchins, expressly describes the Lectiones Theologico-Morales as having been composed by Francesco and records that theologians of the Order had examined and approved the work for publication.
The prefatory material further establishes that Francesco died before the entire publishing enterprise had been completed. His manuscripts were entrusted for posthumous preparation, preserving an unusually direct contemporary account of the transmission of the work from manuscript to print.
Contributor Bio
Claudio dalla Pieve, identifiable with the Ligurian Capuchin Claudio da Pieve di Teco, was a preacher, theologian and senior figure within the Capuchin Order. His name replaces Francesco's on Tomes VII and VIII of the present work.
The precise division of intellectual responsibility between the two friars remains bibliographically complex. The surviving evidence strongly suggests that Claudio participated in completing or continuing Francesco's posthumously published theological programme, particularly in its later sacramental and canonical sections. Contemporary Capuchin catalogues consequently record portions of the series under both names.
