Author Bio: P. Dominique de Colonia (1660–1741) — born at Aix, in Provence, August 25, 1660. Jesuit, professor of rhetoric and theology in Lyon for decades; prolific writer (devotional works, polemics, antiquarian studies). Born in Aix-en-Provence; died in Lyon, September 12, 1741, leaving many works, among which we cite Anliquites de la Ville de Lyon: — Pratique de Piete (Paris, 1717): — La Religion Chretienne Autorisee par le Temoignage des.Anciens Paiens (ibid. 1718; ibid. and Besangon, 1826): — Bibliotheque Janseniste (ibid. 1722, 1731, and elsewhere under different titles). Synopsis: A compact early survey of Lyon’s antiquities, written by the Jesuit scholar Dominique de Colonia and presented to the Duke of Burgundy. The 1701 pocket-edition (12mo) is illustrated with engraved plates (often of Roman remains in and around the city—e.g., the aqueducts at Saint-Irénée) and short historical notices. It’s one of the earliest popular guidebooks to Lyon’s classical monuments and inscriptions, predating Colonia’s expanded 1730s “Antiquités de la ville de Lyon” volumes.
