Provenance: Early ink inscription on front flyleaf: “Ed. Sandys 1747 — ex dono amici charissimi Ant. Champion.” Below, a Latin note citing Plato (“ille princeps ingenii & doctrinae Plato; Ciceronis Ep. ad Fratrem.”).

Synopsis: A Greek anthology of four “symposium” dialogues: Πλάτωνος Συμπόσιον (Plato, Symposium)set at Agathon’s banquet, a series of speeches on Eros culminate in Diotima’s “ladder of love” and Alcibiades’ portrait of Socrates. Ξενοφῶντος Συμπόσιον (Xenophon, Symposium) - Xenophon, Symposium – a livelier dinner at Callias’ house where Socrates and friends mix conversation, jokes, and moral lessons. Πλουτάρχου Συμπόσιον Ἑπτὰ Σοφῶν (Plutarch, Dinner of the Seven Sages) – a convivial set-piece where the legendary wise men trade gnomic counsel and political wisdom. Λουκιανοῦ Συμπόσιον ἢ Λαπίθαι (Lucian, The Carousal / The Lapiths) – a satirical “banquet gone wrong,” parodying philosophers as brawling Lapiths at a riotous feast.
