Author Bio: John Robison (1739–1805), a Scottish physicist and inventor, and professor of natural philosophy at the University of Edinburgh.
Synopsis: This is one of the earliest anti-Illuminati and anti-Freemason conspiracy works. Robison argued that secret societies such as the Illuminati and certain Masonic lodges were plotting to undermine religion and overthrow governments in Europe. Published during a time of fear of revolution following the French Revolution (1789), it fed into late 18th- and 19th-century conspiracy theories.
A rare second edition with added postscript, published in the same year as the first impression. One of the most lauded and controversial condemnations of Free Masonry and the Illuminati ever penned. Including extensive details largely collated from the findings of Alexander Horn, the secret agent monk stationed at the Scots Monastery in Regensburg, who published supposed evidence of an international collaboration between the Masons, Illuminati, and Jacobins to destroy the Catholic Church and the existing governments of Europe. Robison himself was an illustrious professor of natural philosophy at the University of Edinburgh; first General Secretary to the Royal Society of Edinburgh; respected physicist to this day; peer and acquaintance of James Watt, inventor of the Watt steam engine; as well as secretary to Admiral Knowles and sailor with General Wolfe's expedition to Quebec from 1756 to 1762. Robison's involvement in the Scottish Enlightenment and the Encyclopaedia Britannica is well known, and his name is inscribed in the 1776 Minute Book of the Poker Club (the Club was an essential group whose members were enmeshed in the intellectual movements of the day). George Washington himself was sent the book, and was compelled to respond to its claims. A man not lacking in fame, Robison's conspiratorial polemic is backed by his lofty affiliations.
