ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND
By Lewis Carroll

Author Bio: Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (27 January 1832 – 14 January 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English writer of children's fiction, notably Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass. He was noted for his facility with word play, logic, and fantasy. The poems "Jabberwocky" and The Hunting of the Snark are classified in the genre of literary nonsense. He was also a mathematician, photographer, inventor, and Anglican deacon.

Illustrated By: John Tenniel
Illustrator Bio: Sir John Tenniel ( 28 February 1820 – 25 February 1914) was an English illustrator, graphic humourist and political cartoonist prominent in the second half of the 19th century. An alumnus of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, he was knighted for artistic achievements in 1893, the first such honour ever bestowed on an illustrator or cartoonist. According to the V&A, "his intelligent, detailed style elevated the fame and standing of cartoonists immeasurably." Tenniel is remembered mainly as a political cartoonist for Punch magazine for over 50 years (he joined the satirical magazine in 1850 and became its chief cartoonist in 1864) and for his illustrations to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871). Tenniel's detailed black-and-white drawings remain the definitive depiction of the Alice characters, with comic book illustrator and writer Bryan Talbot stating, "Carroll never describes the Mad Hatter: our image of him is pure Tenniel."

Provenance: Period gift inscription on half-title dated 4 Jan. 1877: “To Alice Sherwood with Mrs. M. Browne’s love and best wishes …”

Synopsis: Superb illustrated edition of this emblematic work of Victorian literature that blends fantasy, satire, and paradoxical logic. The story follows Alice, a curious little girl, who falls into a rabbit hole and discovers a wonderful world inhabited by strange creatures and absurd situations. Tenniel provides illustrations that have become inseparable from the text, shaping the visual imagination of characters like the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts. The work plays on language, logical inversions, and implicit critiques of Victorian society, while also offering an initiatory adventure where the child explores the limits of identity and reason.
